New Life Church Grand Opening, Part 1

The second Sunday of January was the “Grand Opening” service of our church’s newest campus. My husband and I joined the launch team in October;  I volunteered to work in the nursery (which I’m loving!) and he’s having a great time playing his fiddle on the worship team. There’s been a potluck after the service most weeks, too, which has been a great time to get to know some wonderful people.

For the first official service, though, instead of a potluck, we had lunch catered by Buster’s Barbecue (yum!) and the pastor asked me to make a couple of cakes. I started with a practice round the week before to get the creative juices flowing (above).

I kept it simple, but I was fairly happy with the results. And after receiving a few compliments along the lines of “Wow! I didn’t know you could do that. I thought it must be store-bought with that fancy frosting!” I felt confident enough to take on a new challenge: fondant.

I really wanted to recreate the church’s logo on one of the cakes, and fondant seemed to be the best method. Thankfully, it wasn’t as difficult as I thought it might be.  My husband deserves some of the credit though; he gave me a few suggestions and even helped create a paper pattern to trace to get the shape of the leaves and stem just right.

As for the cake itself, it’s just a basic (boxed) yellow cake mix, with a dash of vanilla extract, and canned frosting – Betty Crocker, I think.  For the icing, I used my Wilton decorating tools  - tip 3 for the writing and tip 21 for the shell border.

Stay tuned for part 2!
